Calculate Room SPL, Critical Distance & Amplifier Power Across Octave & 1/3-Octave Bands
Why does a '115 dB datasheet speaker' often deliver only 79 dB in the 125 Hz 1/3-octave band at the microphone? And why is the critical distance three times larger at high frequencies than in the bass? Simulate direct sound, diffuse field, directivity Q(f), boundary gain, and SNR live.

The 4 Major Misconceptions in Room & Building Acoustics
Manufacturers often specify maximum SPL as a broadband sum or at 1 kHz in free field. In practice, 3 heavy loss factors strike simultaneously: First, pink noise splits amplifier power evenly across all 24 third-octaves (-13.8 dB per third!). Second, compact speaker enclosures lose 8 to 12 dB efficiency below 250 Hz. Third, room absorption reduces the diffuse field. A '115 dB' datasheet speaker routinely collapses to just 79 dB SPL in the 125 Hz band at the mic!
Critical distance rH marks the point where direct sound and diffuse field levels are equal. Because real speakers beam increasingly at high frequencies (Q(f) rises from ~1 in the bass to 8-14 in treble) and rooms absorb more treble, rH at 4 kHz is often 2 to 3 times larger than at 125 Hz. ISO 3382-2 mandates d >= 2 * rH for valid RT60 measurements – using a single average rH leads to false direct-sound measurements in the highs!
In a room corner (eighth space, pi/2), three intersecting boundaries (floor and two walls) constrain radiation. At low frequencies where wavelength exceeds speaker size, this yields up to +9 dB boundary gain (Q_Mount = 8). Furthermore, a corner source optimally excites all room modes (axial, tangential, oblique) because room corners represent pressure anti-nodes for every single resonant mode.
Sound power level Lw (in dB re 1 pW) is the fundamental, room-independent acoustic emission property of a source – like the wattage of a light bulb. Sound pressure level Lp (in dB SPL re 20 µPa) is the resulting immission at the receiver – like lux on a desk. Lp depends strictly on distance r, room absorption A(f), and directivity Q(f).
